The 11 linked stories follow Leah, a young girl raw with emotion and stuck in the shuffle between divorced parents. The reader is first introduced to a prepubescent Leah on a trip to Niagara Falls with her father and his young love interest, Selena. Her resentment of Selena, and of being in close quarters with her father and his lover in an environment charged with sex, drives Leah to a clumsy attempt at sabotage. In Pet the Spider, Leahs inclination to nurture and her morbid curiosity spur her to bathe a friends paralyzed aunt against the womans will.

A similar preoccupation with the body draws her into a sexual encounter with a much older man in Waitress. She acts not out of desire for the man, but from a need to figure out her role as a woman. That same urge--to be wanted and emotionally strong, as she thinks a woman should be--lures Leah into a secret sexual encounter with her stepbrother, Alec. Deeths prose brings to life the thoughts and actions of adolescent girls, whose emotions and insecurities are so strongly felt, they often overwhelm any inkling of good judgment. --Leah Eichler
